WORKSITE

From late March to late April, the Balloon was built. The work was mostly done in a workshop situated in the center of Auroville. This gave me the opportunity to work on the construction paper having a size of approximately 6.5 meters, when the sphere is flattened.

The most difficult challenges were to achieve a sphere volume based on squares, plus, to find a “harmony” in the assembly of all these different colors. Given the fact that some colors are more in number than others.
This harmony means finding a balance between the different effects experienced by each color, where some are colder and some warmer. Each square having its own temperature coming from the surface of the handprints, which creates a certain density.

To realize the spherical volume, triangles were added, giving to the squares the shape of “panels”. But the most difficult challenge was to assemble the squares in a way that they take the largest surface of the sphere. Moreover, I wanted that the assembly expresses an idea of “expansion”. This means to find a way that the form can “grow”.
This challenge was solved by adding squares “between” each panels of the sphere. As a result of this it was necessary to do a very delicate collage when the panels were assembled.
Finally, the shape of the sphere is based on 12 panels, each containing 10 squares, which is the representation of five people. The maximum diameter of the sphere is 3.70 meters.

Concerning the harmony of colors, I finally found a system where the colors are assembled in a range of color at the base and at the top of the balloon. This gave me the opportunity to resolve more quietly the great “agitation” of the diversity of these 120 different squares.
